Maryland Roundup: Same-Sex Marriage, More Gambling Approved

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (CBSDC) – Aside from the re-election of Senator Cardin, Maryland voters elected for plenty of change on Election Day, even setting a nationwide precedent for education along the way.

Voters ushered in a new era of equality both by approving same-sex marriage in the state, and by allowing illegal immigrants who meet certain criteria to pay in-state tuition at public colleges – making Maryland the first state to approve some version of the Dream Act by way of popular vote.


3RD DISTRICT

Democrat John Sarbanes re-elected to fourth term.

4TH DISTRICT

Democrat Donna Edwards re-elected.

5TH DISTRICT

Democrat Steny Hoyer re-elected to seventeenth term.

6TH DISTRICT

Democrat John Delaney elected to first term, unseating ten-term Roscoe Bartlett.

8TH DISTRICT

Democrat Chris Van Hollen re-elected to sixth term.


SAME-SEX MARRIAGE

The ballot question proposing same-sex marriage was narrowly approved by voters when it received about 52 percent of the vote.

Illegal immigrants can now qualify for in-state rates if they attend a Maryland high school for three years and if they or their parents can show they filed state income taxes during that time.

GAMBLING EXPANSION

The vote for Question 7 will bring a sixth casino to the state of Maryland and new jobs – specifically to Prince George’s County. More than $90 million was spent in advertising on this issue.
